Biography
> Watch: Hopes & Fears Music Video on YouTube
Maria Baptist is one of those artists whose music finds its full force on stage. With physical intensity and a palpable sense of risk, she brings her music to life in performance. The result is something rare: from richly layered compositions emerges music of haunting, deeply moving beauty.
She is both a composer who improvises and a pianist who composes. Her body of work comprises more than 250 compositions, released on seventeen albums, ranging from solo piano cycles to large-scale works for jazz and symphony orchestra, which she performs herself as a soloist.
Born and raised in East Berlin in a family of musicians — her grandfather a composer, her father Armin Baptist a pianist — she began composing and playing the piano at an early age. Maria Baptist studied classical composition and jazz piano at the „Hanns Eisler“ School of Music in Berlin and, as the first student from East Germany, at the New School in New York. In the New York club scene of the 1990s she performed in piano trios, while her large-scale works were performed in Europe by radio big bands and symphony orchestras.
In 2015 she created her own platform for her jazz orchestral work: with the founding of the Maria Baptist Orchestra she established her monthly concert series in Berlin, now presented in more than 110 concerts. As a pianist she also plays large-scale solo piano concerts. Her live album Hopes & Fears, recorded at the Elbphilharmonie, was nominated for the 2025 German Record Critics’ Award.
Conventional stylistic classifications apply only partially to her music. Maria Baptist works with classical and contemporary compositional techniques as well as with the idioms of jazz. In her jazz orchestra works, concerti and symphonies intertwine with jazz improvisation. In her smaller ensembles, large-scale structures become audible when compositions flow into one another and form suite-like frameworks. Projects for string quartet and piano completely overturn conventional genre assignments. Her solo piano work, in turn, is based on improvisations embedded within extended compositional arcs.
Organizational independence is part of Maria Baptist’s working method. All releases appear on her own label she founded in 2006. Her catalogue includes solo recordings, ensemble projects and large-scale orchestral productions, often as live recordings, five of which have been nominated for the German Record Critics’ Award.
Her work has received international recognition for many years. Deutschlandfunk Kultur has described Maria Baptist as “one of the truly great jazz musicians in Germany” and spoken of “powerful masterpieces.” All About Jazz has described her playing as “endlessly clever and classy,” while DownBeat has drawn comparisons to Keith Jarrett.
She has presented her music, among other venues, at the Berlin Philharmonie, the Elbphilharmonie and Harpa Concert Hall in Reykjavík, as well as at jazz festivals and concert halls in New York, Hong Kong and throughout Europe.
Maria Baptist has been a guest professor at the „Hanns Eisler“ School of Music Berlin since 2000, teaching composition, arrangement, music theory, and improvisation.
She lives in Berlin with her wife.
